ABOUT

Certification

SGASA Certification is a safety, quality and compliancy management system.

What is it and why should my Nursery be certified?

The Seedling Growers Association of South Africa was started in 1982 to enable the growers and members to research applicable topics and solve common problems.

This has been very successful and over the years many research projects have been tackled by university students. The results are available to paid up members. The association continues to go from strength to strength and serves the majority of the industry.

Business Challenge

As a result of new pressures from Customers and Legislation, Nurserymen today are constantly challenged to grow safe, healthy products that meet these established and responsible criteria.

Solution

SGASA’s Certification Scheme aims to (i) promote good nursery practices, (ii) ensure legislative requirements are met and (iii) recognise nurseries that are excelling in our industry. The audit process serves as a valuable tool for a participating nursery as feedback is provided by a qualified auditor with regards to process and systems enhancements. The auditor plays a crucial role in ensuring the success and professional implementation of the SGASA Certification Scheme.

Customers are reassured that their products have met the important levels of safety and quality, that the methods employed have a high level of sustainability, that due diligence has been given to the Environment and the Health and Welfare of workers is an ongoing priority. Without these assurances, Nurseries may find that they are denied access to markets. A spinoff of Certification would be the implementation of a QMS (Quality Management System) that would ultimately benefit business profitability.

Certification creates an auditable standard that is easily applied to small or large Nurseries. The scoring system is simple and highlights Major and Minor problems and recommendations.
